On my walk home this evening, I caught the tail end of a nationwide 48-hour protest in Athens about the new reforms necessary to secure the €110 billion bailout package from the EU. Hours after the action, I was assaulted by tear gas still hanging in the air from the two days of violence in and around Syntagma. My eyes and nose were streaming, a pungent peppery burn as I took these pictures and surveyed the remnants of democratic chaos in the birthplace of democracy. *Note to self, gas mask = good investment.
